Go Live, Go Linux!
One way of avoiding malware (viruses, spyware, worms, trojans, etc.) is to simply use a Live Linux Distribution. While using Linux full time or as a productive system might be difficult for many people, using a live Linux distribution to get online and browse the internet is usually effortless. Using a live distribution with your computer is just a matter of booting your computer to a CD, DVD, or USB Drive.
Running a Linux live distribution will not alter any files on your hard drive (unless you allow that) or use any hard drive space, it simply uses your computer's devices (network, sound, video, keyboard, mouse, processor, ram, etc.) and runs directly from the CD, DVD or USB Key. The speed of loading programs is slower, but if you just want to open Firefox to browse the Internet it is well worth the time.
A moderate computer (Pentium 4 Dual Core @ 3 Ghz. / 2 Gigs of Ram) boots the Mandriva One 2009 Linux CD from turning power-on -to- ready to use in a few (3:45) minutes and with full network and sound support. Mandriva is my personal favorite distribution, it has Firefox and Konqueror web browsers, OpenOffice (MS Office alternative), GIMP (for graphics), KDE (nice desktop enviroment) all on the CD ready to use.
Most Live CD's are free to download, burn and use, but you can also install Linux if you prefer. The CD's often work on PC's and even on Intel based Macintosh computers, and can be used to replace your current system if desired.
To find the Linux distro (distribution) that best fits your needs, please visit the following websites and give Linux a try... or stop by BACS and I'll burn you a copy of Mandriva One's current release (2009.1) for free!
