This page explains only the basics for getting started with making clothing in Second Life, and uploading for use inworld. The first thing to do is get aquainted with a good graphics program that can handle layered images, there are three well known (Gimp, PhotoShop and PaintShopPro) applications for this. Gimp is the only one I will recommend since is it the only one available free and for any system. If you don't have a graphic program, click here to visit Gimp's website and download and use Gimp 2.6.
Once Gimp is installed and you open it you will probably think it is very different from other programs, but you will see that it is not so different after all, and should be straight forward and easy to use. If needed there are many pages of documentation, along with many tutorials (both text and videos) covering the use of Gimp online.
For help understanding layers you can have a look at this image with 3 layers used for a Layer example image. You should use the layer tools to move the layer order and see that with layers you can change the appearence and visibility (opacity) per layer, this makes image manipulation much easier.
For a quick and simple tutorial on transparent textures have a look at this page I created to help a friend get started using Gimp.
There are some great templates to use from SecondLife, Chip Midnight and Robin Wood. You should download and extract the templates (or just the one you prefer) so you can use them when creating your clothes. Each set contains Upper, Lower, Head and Skirt templates, you may or may not use each of them eventually, but you will typically use Upper and Lower templates.
